Recent Case: Embezzlement: What the Auditors Could Not Find! Type of Matter: Arxis Work: Once we were authorized to review the bank reconciliations we began work. On the first day it was determined that the reconciliations were indeed problematic. What became apparent very quickly was that the beginning cash balance on any given reconciliation did not agree with the prior month's ending cash balance. The client was relieved that it did not require a week of Arxis Financial's time to evaluate the reconciliations. Once we had proof that there were anomalies in the accounting for cash, further investigation was initiated to determine if the discrepancies were the result of human/software error or the result of intentional manipulation and misrepresentation. Result: We provided several recommendations for company management in order to minimize the chances of future embezzlement. The company was greatly pleased with Arxis Financial's expertise, expediency, successful investigation and recommendations. |
Service Profile: Forensic Accounting Services for Embezzlement and Fraud The trained fraud examination specialists in Arxis Financial's "Forensic Accounting" practice assist in determining the extent of monetary loss or damages and to determine who committed the fraud. Arxis Financial utilizes various investigative and analytical procedures to support criminal or civil actions against an individual(s), and provide evidence for insurance claims. A detailed fraud examination can uncover a dizzying maze of transactions, documents and stonewalling. Forensic experts use a variety of techniques to detect fraud and trace misappropriated cash. By scouring the company's financial ledgers and supporting documents, a Certified Fraud Examiner can help unravel the web of fraudulent transactions. For example, the investigator may review or reconcile the company's bank accounts, identify payees, track electronic transfers and payments through the company's general ledger, and scrutinize documents supporting check disbursement, such as vendor invoices and expense authorizations. Arxis Financial's professionals apply detailed investigation and analysis that is necessary to uncover essential facts and provide meaningful insights. Expert analysis and conclusions are presented in depositions and trial at local, state and federal court levels as well as mediation and arbitration. We assist attorneys in interpreting the data and help counsel to understand and analyze events or issues. The Forensic Accounting practice is headed by partner Chris L. Hamilton, CPA, CFE, CVA. Mr. Hamilton is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, and Certified Valuation Analyst.
