The other day, one of our faithful readers commented that it has been quite a while since we’ve written anything about taxes. What does she think we are, a CPA firm or something? Sheesh!

Question: When are your high school chess trophy, leisure suit, BeeGees 8-tracks, and HBS mug collection not worth as much as you think they are?

Answer: When the State of California starts taxing your yard sales.

SB 607, introduced by Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach) would require a seller’s permit for citizens who have three or more garage sales, or sell three items, that garner proceeds of more than $1,200 in a year. The seller’s permit is (no joke) 8 pages long. Those insidious evildoers who attempt to skirt the system may face fines or penalties for noncompliance.

OK, we’re back on track with tax-related topics. It’s depressing, but are you happy now, honey?

(Thanks to CA Assemblyman Ray Haynes for the tip on the pending yard sale legislation.)
