The IRS is engaged in an aggressive campaign to inform about
20 million Americans of their need to file a tax return in order to receive a tax rebate check. These folks include:
- Seniors whose primary income comes from untaxed sources such
as Social Security
- Low-income workers who earn too little to pay tax
- Veterans who receive disability and pension income, and spouses
of deceased veterans who get survivors' benefits
- Retired railroad workers (Seriously, after working on the
railroad all the live long day just to pass the time away, is it too much to ask to rise up so early in the morn
and file a tax return?)
As a reminder, the IRS will commence sending checks in May
to those who have filed by their 2007 tax return by the April 15 deadline. The process is expected to take several
months, as all IRS checks over $250 require two signatures.
